Educational Goals Update
Educational Goals Update
In the fall of 2013, I wrote a paper in Nurs401, Career Pathway Assessment, in which I set educational goals for myself. As this journey from RN-BSN comes to an end, I am asked to reflect upon these goals. In my paper, my goals consisted of graduating within three to five years with my BSN, achieving a comfort level in researching, formatting and writing papers to produce quality documents and papers. Lastly I set a goal of finding a career choice outside of the hospital setting that would be both lucrative and fulfilling while remaining a nurse.
Academic goal
At the completion of this course, I will have met my goal within the minimum amount of time I afforded myself to earn my BSN. My journey actually began in the summer of 2012 when I started slowly by taking an online class with a friend. Going back to school was a challenge, but as I chipped away at my pre-requisite classes two by two, I made progress and was ready for ODU’s program in the fall of 2013. I am proud of my grades as I maintained a 4.0 GPA until last semester, where I earned a B+. I have honestly put forth my best effort since going back to school and hope to raise my GPA this semester as I finish strong.
Quality work
I made it through Nursing School in 1995 with the help of my high technology typewriter that had Whiteout built in the backspace tab, along with the Dewey Decimal System at the public library. After my eighteen year sabbatical from formal learning, I was nervous about reentering a classroom. To make the situation a little more complicated and anxiety provoking, I was taking online classes, where my writing skills where necessary to survive. I found that technology did not hinder my progress, but propelled me to exceed, as it made research and document writing a breeze. I feel I met this goal as I not only survived, but I thrived with a high GPA, as I was able to produce quality documents and papers. The skills I learned within this program with further assist me as I continue my path of education in the near future when I work towards my DNP.
Options
This journey has opened my eyes to a variety of employment opportunities for nurses beyond the bedside. My goal at the beginning of this program was to find a new career path away from the hospital. Although this goal was met, I do not have an urgency to leave the bedside now. I find leaving the bedside distressing at this time, as I have a true passion to not only help my patients and their families, but I love teaching the student nurses and new orientee to my unit. I will go back to school in order to teach officially, but I am not in a great rush. I feel accomplished in earning my BSN and will pursue a higher degree once I spend one year reorganizing my life to ensure the success of this next degree.
Conclusion
Although this chapter in my formal learning nears the end with my BSN, my career as a student is not over. I am able to say that I have met the goals I made for myself at the beginning of this program. I will proudly add the letters BSN to my badge as a testimony to this journey. This online program has given me the opportunities to not only grow as a student, but as a nurse. The communication skills I have refined in this class will not only help me in the future with writing papers, but in my career with documentation and email correspondence with management. My eyes are open to whole new world of nursing, if ever I decide to venture away from the bedside.
